In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the fashionable body shape was achieved with stays, in the ninetheenth and twentieth centuries with the corset. The corset was worn over a linen shift. Corsets were seldom washed because the material was delicate and they were never worn next to the skin. From 1850 to 1910 the corset underwent a great many changes in shape to keep pace with the changing silhouettes throughout the period.
