Tafelstuk
A gift, made of silver, presented to Isaac Abraham Mendes (1788-1869) and Rachel Cohen da Silva (1788-1868) by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, on 29 June 1858. One of the inscriptions confirms this information:
“Gift
To our dear Father and Mother
For their 50th wedding anniversary
29 June 1858
A day of happiness and prosperity
For the entire family
As a sign of love and affection and of harmony
Between all children”
The pelican that draws blood from its own breast to feed the three children is an emblem of mutual love (Caritas). The roses refer to the married couple’s children, the fuchsias to their grandchildren and the white lilies to their great-grandchildren. The flowers with the broken stems represent family members who had died by 1858.
Donation J.A. Mendes, 1932.
