Like his father, cartographer Joan Blaeu produced land maps, nautical charts, atlases and globes. New details were immediately inserted. This fourth edition of his globe shows numerous empty areas which had yet to be charted. For example, only the western and northern coast of Australia had been explored, following Abel Tasman’s discoveries in 1644.
