A diamond-point engraving on the bowl of this r–mer shows the foundation plan for the proposed New Church tower. This ambitious project, rivalling the tower of the cathedral in Utrecht, was started at the same time as the construction of the new town hall on Dam Square was in progress. However, it proved impossible to finance both projects simultaneously. Moreover, the various parties involved were unable to agree which should be the highest, the town hall dome or the church spire. Work on the tower proceeded but was eventually abandoned.
