Model van een wenteltrap

The maquette is an example of the craftsmanship of the Amsterdam carpenter Hendrik van Raan. He must have been proud of it himself, judging by his monogram and the date 1772 at the top of the staircase. The exact purpose of the wooden model for a staircase is unknown. Van Raan probably made it for a client to show what the spiral staircase would look like in reality. He may also have made it for his own pleasure. It is presumably not a ‘masterpiece’. Van Raan was only registered as a master in the Amsterdam St. Joseph’s guild –the carpenters guild– in 1778. Moreover, staircase models were not among the required tests of mastery in Amsterdam.Gift of Mevrouw P.M. Claassen-Burgers, Amsterdam, 1948
