These copper weather vanes were on the roof of the weigh-house on Dam Square. You can see them in the painting ‘Koppertjesmaandag’ next to these vanes. Fortune was the Roman goddess of fortune or good luck. Neptune was the Roman god of the sea. The vanes are a reminder of Amsterdam’s prosperous relationship with the sea. The weigh-house was demolished in 1808 at the request of King Louis Napoleon, who was living in the town hall at the time. The building spoilt his view of the square.
