Artist Brian Elstak made M54 in commission from CBK Zuidoost and the Amsterdam Museum. He was asked to think about the relationship between the city centre and the periphery of Amsterdam. For Elstak, the metro line from Amsterdam Centraal to Amsterdam Zuidoost provides the perfect illustration of this relationship. He spent a month working in the studio of CBK Zuidoost in Heesterveld, right next door to one of the stations on metro line 54. During this month he observed the passengers who use this line. So his work M54 took shape, a three-dimensional wooden painting in the form of a man riding the metro, which forms the basis for all kinds of metro stories. Brian Elstak (born 1980, Zaandam) is a visual artist: 'Your friendly neighbourhood artist. Armed only with a pencil as sharp as his wits'. He illustrates, paints and works as a connector between various creative spirits and storytellers. He derives his characters from pop culture and society at large. Elstak is a member of the interdisciplinary artists collective LFMC (Lowrey Foley McClane). Writer RFx (Reiner Fosch, born 1978, Zaandam) worked together with producer Alberto Arifi, a.k.a. Nav Beats to create the album 'Reintje Aan De Praat' (Reintje talks) as a soundscape to accompany M54.
