Pompeius Occo and his wife Gerberich Claesdr (1491-1558) are praying to Mary, mother of Christ. Their prayers are supported by the intercession of St Sebastian, with a bow and arrow, and Mary Magdalen, with an ointment jar. The Virgin and Child appear to Occo and his wife as if in a heavenly vision. In the background, the Massacre of the Innocents and the Flight to Egypt are portrayed. A mountain landscape links the three panels, creating a continuous whole. This commission of a painting by Jacob added to Occo’s new status as a burgher of Amsterdam.
