Ajax supporters find all kinds of ways to display the star of David: on clothes, tattoos, necklaces and by waving Israeli flags. While many have used the symbol in the past, the Magen David (Hebrew for ‘shield of David’) became specially associated with Jews in the fifteenth century. Some Jews are annoyed by this use of the symbol by Ajax fans who have nothing to do with Judaism; others see it as a symbol of Amsterdam’s powerful connection with its Jewish heritage.
