De Faam

The statue represents Fame as a woman with wings and symbolizes Progress. It's a copy of the huge statue that stood between 1864 and 1929 on the dome of Amsterdam's Paleis voor Volksvlijt, the crystal palace. The copy is made from bronze-coloured zinc which has a patina. It was a gift from one of the owners of Dudok van Heel and Van Vlissingen's iron foundry. Later, this foundry took the name of Werkspoor, becoming a machine factory in the Amsterdam district of Oostenburg. This firm deliverd much of the metal skeleton of the so-called crystal palace, the Paleis voor Volksvlijt. Many Dutch firms contributed to building this magnificent creation.
