Gravenbeeld, vermoedelijk Philips de Goede van Bourgondië (1396-1467), graaf van Holland, Zeeland en Henegouwen.

Figures of Counts, last quarter 15th century, unknown maker These figures stood in the Vierschaar in Amsterdam’s old town hall. The Vierschaar was a gallery at the front of the town hall where the sheriff would pronounce sentence. Court cases were public and were held in the outdoors in the Middle Ages. Members of the public could follow the proceedings from behind a rail. The figures probably represent Willem IV (1345-1417), Isabella of Portugal (1397-1471 or 1474), Philip the Good (1396-1467) and Jacoba of Bavaria (1401-1436), the counts of Holland. They stood here to represent the power of the counts over the city’s jurisdiction. In the gallery, the figures were brightly coloured.
