Pieter Dircksz. Hasselaer (1554-1616)
Haarlem-born Pieter Dirksz Hasselaer owns a brewery, De Witte Arent, in Amsterdam. He is also a shipowner and one of the first governors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which trades with Asia. In 1594 he becomes a member of the council and thus of the city government. Compared with his son’s, his political influence is limited, but he certainly paves the way.
