Harmen Hendrik van de Poll’s political career was just over in 1749 when his portrait was painted by Hendrik Pothoven. A year previously stadholder Willem IV had ordered him "removed" from the Vroedschap, the city council in which the leading families of Amsterdam were represented. From then on he devoted himself mainly to his trading interests in Suriname.
