Willem III (1650-1702), Prins van Oranje
Willem was the son of Mary Stuart and stadholder Willem II (died 1650). In 1672 France, England, Munster and Cologne launched a massive attack on the dutch Republic, whereupon Willem III was proclaimed stadholder and commander-in-chief of the army.
Amsterdam supported him in this war, despite its dislike of his political beliefs. When the danger subsided, Willem advocated a European alliance against France, but this time Amsterdam turned against him, for the city had suffered enough from the war and now longed for peace, which was signed in 1678. Amsterdam did give Willem its support when he crossed over to England in 1688, where he dethroned king James II, his father-in-law. Willem III was crowned King of England and Ireland, while retaining his stadholdership.
