During the night of 4-5 February 1825 the dyke on the Zuyder Zee coast between Schellingwoude and Durgerdam burst. There was widespread flooding. The homeless found shelter in Amsterdam, some in the orphanage on Prinsengracht, which today houses the law courts. The Prince of Orange visited flood victims on 14 February. The flood waters didn’t completely retreat until June the next year.
