De Amsterdamse burgemeesters vernemen de aankomst van Maria de Medici

Marie de Medici arrived in Amsterdam on 1 September 1638. She was the first foreign member of a Royal house to visit the still-young independent Netherlands and was given an enthousiastic reception. In the painting the city lawyer Cornelis Davelaer is announcing the queen’s arrival to the burgomasters. They are, from right to left, Abraham Boom, Albert Coenratsz Burgh, Pieter Pietersz Hasselaer and Anthony Oetgens van Waveren. The sketchy painting probably served as a model for a print that was made after it. It is possible that the work was commissioned by Davelaer, who escorted the queen mother personally through the city.
