The story of the Three Kings takes place shortly after the birth of Christ. Led by a bright star, these Wise Men from the East have arrived at the stable and removed their crowns in humility. They honour Christ with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Mary, dressed in blue with a white bonnet, holds the child as it reaches out to the golden beaker. Joseph stands a little to the rear, the ox and ass beside him. With its ruins and the column showing Renaissance motifs as well as the many colourful details, this rendition of the tory typifies Cornelisz's studio. Given the modest format, the panel was probably intended for private devotion.
