Theatrum anatomicum

A new room was built at St Anthonis weigh house on Nieuwmarkt in 1691 for the surgeons guild. This Theatrum Anatomicum was a circular room beneath a windowed dome. An auditorium with seats and standing room was arranged around the dissecting table. This gave visitors a good view of the dissections. The lectures were public, not restricted to surgeons. Prominent burghers of Amsterdam and indeed anyone who could afford a ticket, would come to watch the annual spectacle. Dissections would normally be done in winter. Bodies remained fresh longer when the weather was cold. Which was important since anatomy lessons could continue for several days.
