Het mirakel ter heilige stede, het wonder van de niet-verteerde hostie

This painting on canvas is the largest of three preserved fragments of a pictorial narrative. In several scenes it depicts the Amsterdam miracle of the host as this is said to have occurred in 1345. An old man on his deathbed receives the sacrament. Shortly afterwards he has to vomit. The left scene shows the host and the vomit being thrown into the fire. The middle scene depicts two angels protecting the host, which hovers above the fire. Right, a woman retrieves the undamaged host from the ashes. She it is who will inform the authorities of the miracle. A chapel, the Heilige Stede (holy place), was built on the site of the miracle in 1347. The event made Amsterdam an important place of pilgrimage.
