The ship exploded when naval lieutenant J.C.J. van Speyk threw a light – or a cigar – into the gunpowder barrel. Like an arrow, the Dutch tricolour shot spectacularly into the sky. Most of t he sailors were killed in the explosion. This picture was bought by the Civic Orphanage in 1832. It could be viewed for a charge of 25 cents.
