De Kloveniersburgwal met uitzicht op de St. Anthoniswaag

In 1691 the Guild of Surgeons made a final move to the St Anthony's Weigh-house. The old Meat Hall on the Nes could no longer accommodate the steadily growing stream of students and servants at anatomy lessons; moreover, the former chapel was falling into disrepair. On the second storey of the Weigh-house the city constructed a large Theatrum Anatomicum. A spacious central tower with skylights was also added to the old city gatehouse, in order to allow as much daylight as possible into the dissecting room. In popular speech the Weigh-house quickly became known as 'de Snyburgh' (Chopping Castle).
