On a heavily populated Mount Calvary we witness the events preceding the Crucifixion. The painting depicts various scenes from the Passion. Above left Christ is being mocked; right, he is being flogged and crowned with thorns. Mary and John are visible in the background while Saint Veronica holds up the headcloth with the imprint of Christ's face. In the centre, executioners are nailing Christ to the Cross. The three richly-clothed figures in the foreground play no part in these abominations. They may be portraits of the commissioners.
