The image of the burning tram in the Van Baerlestraat during the squatters’ riots of the early 1980s was incorporated by Gordijn into his series of paintings of Amsterdam. In from the same series his purpose is to show how city dwellers have become estranged from their food. Animal carcasses no longer hang in butchers’ shop windows but are boned and delivered frozen.
