Munt

In the mid 1990s Herman Gordijn did a whole series of paintings of Amsterdam. Gordijn removed the surface layer of the city in these paintings. He omitted, for example, the junk and neon advertising in the painting of the Munt, leaving only the stark shape of the yellow tram in the morning light. In the painting of Leidsestraat he transformed the tram cables into a conveyor belt for pigs’ carcasses. It is reminiscent of the hams in the shop window of the Dikker & Thijs delicatessen. The shop’s gone and meat is camouflaged more and more.
