This oil sketch is the only known painted preliminary study for a civic guard painting. Govert Flinck produced it to give his patrons an idea of his composition for the work they had ordered.
In the study the guardsmen are not shown with any personal traits. In the large painting - on view in the Schuttersgalerij - the left and right hand parts of the composition have been separated. Portraits of more guardsmen were also included.
