Jan Veth, painter, draughtsman, author and poet, is famous above all for his painted and lithograph portraits of well-known Dutch figures and artists. In 1924 Veth moved into Keizersgracht 327. Looking out from his studio he painted this sober 'portrait' showing the rear facades of houses on Herengracht.
