De Omval bij Amsterdam
On the banks of the Amstel three elegantly dressed young men are bargaining with two fishermen. On the far bank, De Omval, a tavern popular on day outings awaits them. The subdued view of the countryside outside Amsterdam is towards the south-east. Esselens sketched the composition from the west bank of the Amstel. On the left are three windmills flanking the ring canal round the Watergraafsmeer or Diemermeer, a lake drained in 1629. The Omval, a spit of land, was an important dividing of waterways from time immemorial. In the foreground the Amstel leads to Utrecht and the Rhine. The coach on the dike and the tow boat on the canal are en route for the Gooi district.
