From 1846, B. Kooij Jzn ran a sugar factory on Grote Bickerstraat, with a landing quay for goods on the Westerdok. Ten years after its establishment, a new company was set up, the Amsterdamsche Stoomsuikerraffinaderij. The factory burned down in September 1874. The painting offers a view of the Westerdok, seen from the Westerdoksluis. From his apartment he had a view of the Westerdok and the IJ.
