IJsvermaak op het IJ voor Amsterdam

In the winter of 1621 the river IJ was completely frozen over, possibly the motivation for the painting here. The view of Amsterdam seen from the northern bank of the river IJ is presented in an extremely wide angle. On the expansive icy surface various seasonal activities are taking place. It seems as if the entire urban population is presented on the frozen water - young and old, rich and poor. In the distance is the outline of the city of Amsterdam, linked to the foreground by a line of receding figures. Arent Arentszoon Cabel was one of the first to paint views of Amsterdam. Apart from his own observations, he probably based this picture on prints of the city profile.
