Amsterdam was one of the most important ports of Europe. Ships carrying grain unloaded at the warehouses there. cargoes of wood for house and shipbuilding travelled down the IJ, bound for Amsterdam and the district around zaandam. From all corners of the world ships arrived with their cargoes at the world trading centre of Amsterdam. They brought an enourmous variety of products, both from the colonies and elswhere.
