It is not known who the family in this portrait is. In a back room a grandfather is seated with his children and grandchildren. On the wall between long sash windows hangs the picture of his dead wife. The open window offers a view over a city garden towards a garden house. The room in which the family is seated is luxuriously furnished. The walls are hung with ‘Utrecht’ velvet against which are placed wall candelabra with mirrors that reflect the light. A precious carpet from Smyrna lies upon the floor, covered with special cloths to protect it. The chairs with goats’ feet stand in a row against the wall. They were only moved from this position when there was company. A toddler wearing a velvet padded bonnet sits in a high chair. On the table is a silver inkstand and a bell to summon the butler.
