In 1835 Van der Hoop commissioned the society painter Jan Adam Kruseman to paint his portrait. The anchor in the relief moulding traditionally symbolizes Hope. The pedestal, the curtain and the dog serve to highlight the status attained by the subject. Van der Hoop wears the insignia of the Order of Commander of the Netherlands Lion. Jan Adam Kruseman was an important portait and history painter. He carried out a number of commissions for Van der Hoop. With six paintings, he is the best represented artist in the collection.
