Jan Cornelisz. Geelvinck (1579-1651)

Jan Cornelisz Geelvinck was a merchant and shipowner. Through his marriage he joined the ranks of the wealthy Amsterdam ruling class. Having made a fortune for himself through trade, in around 1632 he built the country seat of Oosterhout in Heemstede. From 1624 on Geelvinck served as a member of the town council and in 1633-34 he represented the Province of Holland in the States-General, the central government. In 1646 he was appointed burgomaster of Amsterdam for the eleventh time. Cornelis Jonson began his career as a portrait painter in London. Sometime after 1642 he settled in Middelburg. He worked in both The Hague and Amsterdam and in 1652 moved to Utrecht. In this portrait of Geelvinck the artist appears to have adapted his normally elegant style to suit Amsterdam tastes.
