De Dam

After the demolition of the old town hall the Dam became a square of stature and an inspiration for many painters. Van der Heyden not only put emphasis on the grandeur of the square, but also on the addition to the Nieuwe Kerk. It is morning, the Nieuwe Kerk sundial indicates nine o’clock. Only the corners of the town hall and the weigh house are visible to the right and left. Here the Nieuwe Kerk is portrayed further to the right of its actual position. This allows us to see the foundation of the spire, which was never completed.
