De regenten van het Leprozenhuis

Ferdinand Bol, originally from Dordrecht, is regarded as one of Rembrandt’s most important apprentices. After establishing himself as an independent master in 1642 he developed into a highly successful painter. His marriage to a rich merchant’s daughter in 1653 gave Bol access to the highest governing circles in Amsterdam. The painting shows the four governors meeting, with the warden drawing their attention to a young boy. The child may be suffering from favus, an infectious fungal skin disease affecting children living in unhygienic conditions.
