Herring-packers Tower was originally part of Amsterdam´s 15th-century defence line. Having lost its military function, it was crowned with a spire in 1606. at ground level the tower was used by various herring packers. The tower was demolished in 1829. On an island in the river IJ, left of the tower, is the New City Inn, built in 1662. This was intended for travelers who failed to reach the city before dusk.
