De regentessen van het Leprozenhuis

Following his two earlier commissions for the Leper House, in 1668 Ferdinand Bol painted portraits of the four governors and the three governesses. The governesses are seated at a table covered with an expensive oriental carpet. They are posing for their portrait while managing the financial affairs of the institution. They would meet each week to discuss these matters. The women are (left to right) Clara Abba (1631-1671), Elisabeth van Duijnen (c. 1620-1703) and Agatha Munter (1632-1687), all married to or widows of Amsterdam merchants. Their coats of arms are depicted on the mantelpiece above which the painting was originally displayed in the room in which they met.
