In this allegorical scene Economia, the female figure in the centre, symbolizes the good care that the hospice provides. Economia’s attributes are a pair of compasses, a staff, a rudder and a garland of olives. On the left the aged line up for care. After receiving a loving welcome (centre) they enter the Hospice for Old Men and Women (right). Behind Economia to the left is Hope in Need, crowned with a planetarium. The winged figure, also on the left, is Saturnus, the god of old age. The residents of the Hospice for Old Men and Women were required to be members of the Reformed congregation and to have lived in the city for at least fifteen years. They also had to pay the hospice a tenguilder fee. In 1757 the institution acquired a new building. Today the premises are used by the University of Amsterdam.
