Het Begijnhof met de Engelse Kerk

The Begijnhof was founded in 1307. After the Protestants took over power in Amsterdam – the so-called ‘Alteration’ of 1578 – the Beguines lost their church but were allowed to continue living in their houses. In 1607 the English Reformed Church took over the Beguines’ church. You can see a couple of Beguines in their eighteenthcentury costume in the foreground The fenced lawn was used as a bleaching field by the Beguines living in the surrounding houses.
