De Willemsparkweg in aanbouw

Amsterdam expanded steadily after 1880. For the first time largescale housing projects were built outside the former Singelgracht. This panorama from a viewpoint between the Vondelpark and the still undeveloped Willemsparkweg shows the new expansion areas on the southern outskirts. On the left is the Koepelkerk in the Leidseplein (1884, demolished 1972); in the centre is the Rijksmuseum (1885) and in the right background is the Concertgebouw (1888). The tall chimney is that of the Candle Factory on the Boerenwetering. The painting must have been produced before 1894 when the Stedelijk Museum was built. Marie Heineken studied at the Rijksacademie under August Allebé. All her life she lives and worked in Amsterdam.
