Dr. De Ranitz was the medical superintendent of the Children’s Hospital from 1865 to 1908. A separate visiting hour was established for the poor, or less fortuned. The Children’s Hospital played an important role in vaccinating against smallpox. As of 1870, the Amsterdammers had themselves vaccinated en masse, in the patient records of the hospital mention was always made of whether new patients were inoculated. When the Children’s Hospital was named after Emma in 1899, the (then gilded) cast-iron letters were affixed to the façade. During royal visits the patients received presents, but the people of Amsterdam also gave clothing and toys tot the Children’s Hospital. The Easter service with the blue and green border was used for festive occasions.
