The 14-year-old Maria Wilhelmina (Mies) Beugeling was crazy about swimming. Her mother made this costume of printed cotton for her. Mies had swimming lessons in the newly opened pool close to the Olympic Stadium. It wasn't until a special section was opened for women in 1923 that she should actually swim there. Mixed swimming was not common until 1930s.
