Herenvest

18th Century men of means dressed in clothes made of the same type of lavish materials, brightly coloured and copiously decorated as women. A man’s expensive clothes showed him to be a man of standing: they advertised his status. Standard dress for men in this period was a knee-length jacket, a waistcoat and tight breeches. It was the precursor of today’s business suit. A lace neckerchief was worn at the neck; lace cuffs extended beyond the sleeves; expensive silk stockings were worn on the legs with low, pointed shoes set with a silver buckle. Some men wore calf padding to make their lower leg appear more shapely.
