En route to Denmark Karel Appel was struck by the poverty of post-war Germany when he saw starving children begging for food at railway stations. He would never forget the look in the eyes of the ragged children as they stared at him, and it would become a recurring theme in the sculptures and paintings he made in the late 1940s. Appel was one of the artists who founded Cobra in 1948.
