Allegorical figures were Van Logteren’s speciality. One of the children is holding a sprig of laurel, the other a horn of plenty. The incense burner and the sprig possibly indicate that the first figure depicts the sense of Smell. The combination of a horn of plenty, books and a ‘conon at rest’ in the other can be interpreted as a depiction of Peace. Whether these figures are a complementary pair or formed part of a larger series is unknown. It is equally uncertain whether they are studies or finished works of art.
