Gevelsteen 'T GELOOF'

Stone tablet with a standing woman in a loose garment. In her left hand she holds a large cross, in her right hand an open book. The cross is supported by a stone on which also her left foot rests. On the lower edge stands T.GELOOF (The Faith). She is the personification of the three Godly virtues: Faith, Hope and Love. The cross and the book (the bible) are obvious, the stone on which her foot rests is the cornerstone, the foundation on which the church, the faith, rests. The stone is from the second half of the 17th century and comes from Leidsestraat no. 89, one of the three houses which Harmen Harmensz., glazier of profession, had built in 1663/1664 shortly after the Leidsestraat was built. The other houses had stone tablets with The Hope on no. 93 and The Love on no. 91. In 1903 architect A. Jacot replaced these houses by a shop. Only the stone with The Faith was saved and was bought at an auction by the K.O.G. in 1934. Size: 67 x 45cm.
